Changes in sensation, including reduced sensitivity, are a possible risk of genital surgery. Surgical planning aims to protect sensitive structures, but no technique can guarantee that sensation will remain unchanged or that sexual satisfaction will improve. Your surgeon will discuss the risks and expected recovery with you before treatment.
Vaginoplasty may involve the vaginal wall and supporting tissues, rather than only the external opening. The area and extent of any repair depend on your anatomy, symptoms and examination findings. Your surgeon will explain the proposed procedure, its limitations and its risks during your consultation.
The surgery is performed under anesthesia, which may be local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia. Post-operative discomfort and tenderness are expected but can usually be managed with prescribed pain medication and the aftercare instructions provided by your surgeon. The level and duration of discomfort vary between patients.
Scarring is possible after labiaplasty. Surgeons plan incisions carefully, often along natural tissue contours, and scars may become less noticeable as they mature. Their appearance depends on the technique used, individual healing and aftercare; an invisible scar cannot be guaranteed.
Labiaplasty removes tissue and is intended to produce long-lasting changes. However, appearance can change over time with aging, hormonal changes, pregnancy or childbirth. Results vary, and your surgeon will discuss what is realistic for you.
Labiaplasty involves the external labial tissue rather than the reproductive organs, so it generally does not directly affect fertility. Future pregnancy and childbirth may change the tissues and the result. Discuss your plans with your surgeon to decide whether treatment now or after childbirth is more appropriate.
You will need to wait for the tissues to heal before resuming strenuous exercise and sexual activity. The typical timeframe is around 4 to 8 weeks, but this varies depending on individual healing progress and the specifics of your surgery. It is crucial to wait for your surgeon's explicit clearance before resuming these activities.
